How to choose
If you are buying to play a tape collection you already own, transport quality is everything and features are noise. A player with a stable motor and correctly set azimuth will make ordinary tapes sound dramatically better than a feature-laden unit with a sloppy mechanism.
If you want to record, be realistic about what is available new. The recording circuitry in most current portables is basic, and a serviced vintage deck remains the better option for anyone who cares about the result rather than the convenience.

Do new cassette players sound as good as vintage ones?
Generally not. The best vintage portables used mechanisms and head materials that are simply not manufactured at this price point any more. The best new units are convenient and reliable, which has its own value.
Will a cheap player damage my tapes?
It can. Poorly aligned or dirty heads and worn pinch rollers can crease or chew tape, and this risk is much higher on the cheapest models.
